Joanna knows the Community Futures program from many different perspectives. She started with Community Futures--Cowichan as a volunteer in 1992, and later joined the staff as Community Development Co-ordinator. Joanna has held her current position as General Manager of Cowichan Community Futures since 1996. Between 2004 and 2006, she took on the additional role of Capacity Building Manager for the BC Community Futures Association, developing and implementing a program designed to help Community Futures staff and volunteers run excellent organizations and deliver the highest quality programs and services.
Joanna has an extensive background in communications and management, has worked in government at the federal and provincial levels, written for a local newspaper, been self-employed as a communications and public relations consultant, and was partner in a small business making wood products for IKEA. Throughout her CED career, Joanna has designed and delivered a variety of training workshops for staff, volunteers and community members. Her approach to training is to engage and challenge her audience, and to learn from workshop participants as they learn from her. Joanna’s varied CED experience and work with many Community Futures organizations gives her a wealth of real-life stories and examples to illustrate the subject at hand.
Giving back to the community is important to Joanna. Her job allows her to do that every day, and so do her volunteer activities. Her two daughters are a constant reminder that the work Joanna does today will help create a better future for them.

Leona’s experience as a trainer and facilitator dates back to the early 90’s. She thoroughly enjoys interaction while working with community groups. It can be said that she truly enjoys working with people, with words such as “good listener” and “open learning” being used by past participants. Leona likes to create a relaxed/fun learning environment where even if the content is “heavy”, participants walk away with renewed.
